Fluid inclusion evidence for extreme overpressure induced by gas generation in sedimentary basins

چکیده
Abstract Formation and preservation of extremely high-pressure fluid in sedimentary basins is critical to understanding petroleum accumulation basin evolution; however, this issue remains poorly understood due a lack key evidence. We present inclusion evidence from the Paleozoic black shales eastern Sichuan Basin (South China block) that suggest gas generation can form methane-saturated fluids with pressures significantly exceeding lithostatic pressure. The internal pressure so high (e.g., ~77 MPa) hydrate formed at ambient temperature, aqueous-vapor homogenization could not be achieved under pressure, was beyond scope current equation state for NaCl-H2O-CH4 system. infer formation >230 MPa), induces hydrofracture weak compressional tectonic regimes, where excess accumulated sustained. Fluid records an abnormally magnitude overpressure indicate small differential stress thus serve as microscale indicator quiescence.

Abnormal fluid pressures caused by deposition and erosion of sedimentary basins
Gravitational loading or unloading due to deposition or erosion in sedimentary basins is one of the most common mechanisms responsible for abnormal fluid pressures in geologic formations. This paper examines the integrated response of fluid pressures to both deposition and erosion using vertical one-dimensional numerical models. The modeling results show that vertical loading and unloading of s...
متن کاملFast and Slow Compaction in Sedimentary Basins
A mathematical model of compaction in sedimentary basins is presented and analyzed. Compaction occurs when accumulating sediments compact under their own weight, expelling pore water in the process. If sedimentation is rapid or the permeability is low, then high pore pressures can result, a phenomenon which is of importance in oil drilling operations. Here we show that one-dimensional compactio...
متن کاملDissolution /precipitation mechanisms for diagenesis in sedimentary basins
[1] The transformation of hydrated clay minerals (smectite) to anhydrous forms (illite) occurs in the diagenesis of shales in sedimentary basins. The released pore water can lead to excess pore pressures and is of concern in oil drilling operations. Most simply, the process can be modeled as a first-order thermally activated reaction, but an alternative interpretation is that diagenesis occurs ...
متن کاملAdaptive Resonance Theory Based Sedimentary Basins Identification
The objective of this paper is to present identification and recognition of Magneto-telluric data for sedimentary basins using Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART). Several sets of data consisting of 17 phases and 17 apparent resistivity values and their respective tag values are given. These sets of data are used for training the network, and other sets of data are used to test the network. The tes...

Mashkan barite prospect area is located in the northeastern Sabzevar, Khorasan Razavi Province. Geology of the area includes sedimentary rocks of conglomerate, sandstone, limestone with interbeds of shale and shale with interbeds of sandstone and Eocene volcanic units of andesite and trachyandesite. Barite with open space filling, massive, radial, and planar textures occurs as vein-type with mo...
